Senegal: Changing lives through sport

Published on

In Senegal, many of the most vulnerable young people face barriers to taking part in sports, from a lack of facilities and resources to exclusion rooted in cultural norms.

AFD supports three complementary programs that help break down these barriers. In Yoff, Surfkids Shredding Senegal, led by ASC Malika Surf, gives young girls the opportunity to surf. The Special Olympics Senegal movement promotes the inclusion of people with disabilities in the lead-up to the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. And in Dakar and Thiès, the Fencing and Restorative Justice program, led by APSE in partnership with IRD, uses fencing to support social reintegration.

Three years on, this film follows up with three participants – Deguene, Gerard, and Macoura – as they share how these programs have changed their lives.

English subtitles are available in the video setting.
